Hey there! I'm Guillermo Casarín—a Mexican film director, screenwriter, and producer. Growing up, movies were my escape hatch to different worlds in galaxies far far away (I am a nerd), but somewhere along the line, I figured I'd like to create those worlds myself. I got pretty tired of seeing my community stuck in stereotypical roles, so I made it my mission to bring better representation to marginalized groups.
I have been lucky enough to catch some eyes—recognized by the Directors Guild of America (DGA), the Emmys, and over 130 film festivals, many of them Oscar-qualifying like the Austin, Guanajuato, Chicago, and Santa Barbara International Film Festivals. I've also had the chance to work with some amazing clients like the White House, HBO, CVS Health, the American Cancer Society, and the City of Los Angeles.
I've directed a bunch of short films, commercials, and public service announcements. One of my favorite projects was "Este año, tu voto es Cosa Seria," which aired nationally and reached over 46 million US Latines. We even got Oscar nominee Edward James Olmos on board.
My short documentary "Bad Hombrewood" takes a swing at Hollywood's lack of Latinx representation. It features some incredible talent like Academy Award-winning directors Guillermo Del Toro (the coolest Guillermo), Phil Lord, Lee Unkrich, and actress Melissa Fumero.
I co-directed the horror film "Phantom of the Opera," financed by six-time Emmy winner John Wells and executive produced by two-time Oscar nominee John Watson. My latest directorial adventure is a documentary for X44, a company founded by seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton.
As a finalist in "The Commercial Directors Diversity Program (CDDP)" created by the AICP and the DGA, I'm proud to advocate for diversity and representation in the film industry.
I'm all about making films that can make a difference. One of my short films, "Of Reasons and Rumors," was a collaboration with VaccinateLA to encourage the Latinx community to get vaccinated. It was presented to the White House Covid-19 Community Corps, the Association of Schools & Programs in Public Health, and the Hispanic Alliance for Health, reaching millions across the US, Guatemala, and Canada.
Another project I produced, "The Rewrite," was directed by Emmy winner Ken Aguado and starred Chris Geere and Chris Webster. I've produced dozens of commercials that have aired nationwide and reached millions.
I earned my BFA in Film from Art Center College of Design with honors and snagged the highest GPA in my class—yeah, I'm a bit of a nerd. I also received an "honors term," an award given to only one student across all majors. Later, I graduated with my master's degree from the University of Southern California, Fight On, thanks to The George Lucas Family Foundation Production Scholarship, and I almost died when I got that scholarship. I was also lucky enough to receive the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation grant.
It's been an incredible journey so far, and I'm excited to keep creating and pushing for better representation and diversity in the film industry.
